How to set up and use Internet Explorer to access your file sharing folder on the department server from a remote location

(Last updated: 10/15/2006 )

1. Before you begin

Make sure that you are running Internet Explorer 5 or better. Also make sure that  the 'Enable folder view for ftp sites' option is checked in your Internet Explorer.

To verify or turn on the folder view option;

1) Open Internet Explorer;

2) From the Tools menu, select 'Internet Options';

3) In the 'Internet Options' Window, click on the 'Advanced' tab;

4) Scroll down the 'Advanced' window and locate the 'Enable folder view for FTP sites' option. Check the box if it is not checked;

5) Reboot your computer after you select the option.

2. Access the folder from an off-campus remote location

Caution: Use the following method on your home computer. Internet Explorer by default will remember your password. If you want to access your folder from other locations, use a ftp program such as WS_FTP.

1) Open Internet Explorer;

2) In the 'Address' field, type in the following address (or URL):

Windows98 users:

ftp://username:password@ftp.forlang.mtsu.edu/faculty/username/

For example, if your username is 'foo' and your password is 'aaa', you can type in the following address:

ftp://foo:aaa@ftp.forlang.mtsu.edu/faculty/foo/

Windows2000/XP users:

ftp://username@ftp.forlang.mtsu.edu/faculty/username/

You will be prompted to enter your password. Again, substitute 'username' in the above address with your username.

3) Now you are in your file sharing folder. You can copy and paste files from/to the server folder just like working with files on your own local computer.
